Mexican authorities have detained a man identified as the head of a violent criminal faction, accusing him of orchestrating the assassination of a local mayor and linking his group to the on-camera killing of a social media personality. The arrest, carried out by combined military and police forces, was announced on Tuesday.

The suspect, Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, known by the alias "El R-1," is believed to lead Los Rs, a cell operating under the umbrella of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Officials say his group is responsible for a string of crimes, including extortion, drug trafficking, and multiple homicides across the western states of Michoacán and Jalisco.

According to the federal security ministry, Álvarez Ayala is accused of financing and ordering the November 2025 murder of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo, a vocal anti-crime figure who had been targeted for his efforts to purge corruption from the local police. The arrest has also yielded new information connecting the suspect to the May 2025 death of Valeria Márquez, a TikTok influencer with over 100,000 followers, who was shot during a live broadcast from her beauty salon in Zapopan.

The younger man, who had previously been in a relationship with the influencer, allegedly threatened her repeatedly after their breakup. García Harfuch indicated that Francisco may have requested his father’s help in carrying out the femicide, a designation under Mexican law for gender-based killings.

Video from the livestream showed a man entering the salon, asking Márquez if she was Valeria, and handing her a gift before fatally shooting her. The footage then cut off as another person ended the stream. At the time, the case was already under investigation as a femicide, and authorities have since arrested an additional individual for alleged involvement in the attack.

Álvarez Ayala is now held at the Altiplano maximum-security prison while federal prosecutors prepare charges. Meanwhile, Francisco remains a fugitive. In a separate development, the U.S. Treasury Department recently sanctioned over 50 individuals and entities linked to the CJNG, describing it as one of the world’s most powerful drug trafficking organizations.
