For billions across the developing world, high-speed access could unlock education, healthcare, and economic opportunity. Yet, as private space ventures from the United States and other wealthy nations race to blanket the planet with signals, a critical question emerges: will the Global South gain true access, or simply a new form of dependency?
Current proposals from companies like those led by Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk offer a tantalizing vision—low-cost, high-bandwidth internet beamed from orbit to even the most remote regions. Governments and communities in Africa, Asia, and Latin America have rightly welcomed these technologies as potential catalysts for growth. But the enthusiasm overlooks a sobering reality: the infrastructure, pricing, and governance of these networks remain firmly in foreign hands.
The danger is not merely economic, but strategic. If the Global South becomes reliant on external providers for its digital backbone, it surrenders control over a vital utility. Data sovereignty, cybersecurity, and even the ability to set local content policies could be compromised. A country that depends on a foreign constellation for its internet traffic is, in effect, renting its digital future from a private corporation accountable to shareholders—not to its citizens.

The African Union's recent push for a unified digital market is a promising step, but it requires teeth.
International bodies also have a role to play. The United Nations and its specialized agencies should promote a multilateral framework for satellite internet governance, ensuring that spectrum allocation and orbital slots—finite resources—are shared fairly. Without such rules, the current free-for-all will entrench the digital divide, not erase it.
The choice ahead is clear. The Global South can accept a future where its digital lifelines are owned by a few billionaires in California, or it can demand a seat at the table—and build its own. The technology is available; the political will is the missing ingredient. If leaders in emerging economies act boldly, they can turn a potential vulnerability into a foundation for genuine self-determination.
